voicemail

SquawkBox for July 7, 2008

Today on the show we had a very lively discussion on the topic of “Is Voicemail Dead?” revolving around Michael Arrington’s post “Think Before You Voicemail” and Andy Abramson’s followup.

Discussion included: is voicemail really dead? or has it merely evolved into another form? There was much discussion about services like SpinVox that transcribe your voicemail and send it to you as a SMS or email message. We talked about the role of IM and how some of us will IM a person to see if they can talk. We had some on the call who took an opposing view and still found value in voicemail.  We talked about presence… about whether we were a bunch of early adopters and not representative of “normal” users… about the role of spam in killing email and much, much more…

Like I said, it was a lively discussion that went on for most of 40 minutes.

After that, we briefly talked about the recent Viacom vs. Google court decision where Google has to turn over information about YouTube users to Viacom…  the conversation began with Dameon Welch-Abernathy’s comment “Privacy is dead, get over it” and kind of went on from there… heading out into first amendment issues, moral standards (and who defines them) and a range of other issues before we finally wrapped the call around 45 minutes.

It was an enjoyable session for us and I hope you all find it enjoyable, too.

On the call: Dan York (host), Andy Abramson, Carl Ford, Dameon
Welch-Abernathy, Jeanette Fisher, William Volk, Jeb Brilliant, Jonathan Jensen, Krishna De and Michael Graves.

SquawkBox April 11 – Guest Joe Sipher

by alec on April 11, 2008

On today’s SquawkBox we hosted Joe Sipher of Pinger.  It was a pretty interesting call.

Until today I really thought of Pinger as being an audio substitute for text messaging.  Not so!  Their Pinger Voicemail sounds way cool! Does your voicemail system let you reply to voice mail with another voice message?  Notify you with a text message when a new voicemail has arrived and take you directly to that message when you dial in?

Enjoy the call, and see you Monday for more SquawkBox fun and excitement!

Voicemail that doesn’t suck

February 7, 2008

Ever wonder why voicemail systems seem to universally use the 7 key to skip to the next message?   I'll give you a clue… the 7 key also includes the letters PWRS underneath it.  Yes, "S" is for "skip".  That was pointed out to me in 1985 when yours truly was a student programmer working on [...]
