Microsoft commercials that work.

by alec on March 27, 2009

Finally Microsoft has some advertising that will appeal to ordinary people.  The gist?  PC’s are cheaper (a lot cheaper!) than Mac’s. Haven’t I been saying that here for a very very long time

The campaign is very clever – pose as a market research firm, give ordinary people a budget to go buy a PC (or a Mac), and then film them.  As a bonus, let them keep the difference between the budget and what they spend. It reminds me of that classic of the 1980′s — the Pepsi Challenge.

Ad #1 features Lauren shopping for a computer under $1,000.  She visits the Apple Store, can’t find what she wants, and then heads over to the PC store.  $699 later she walks away with a nice new HP laptop and cash in hand.

This ad works.   Perhaps the best line in the whole commercial came when,   disappointed in not being able to find the laptop she wants at the Apple Store, Lauren says “I’m just not cool enough to be a Mac person”.  In this economy, where conference calls trump travel, and staycations replace vacations, saving money is the new cool and Microsoft is surely banking on it.

CTRL-ALT-DEL

by alec on January 11, 2006

Here’s a video of Dave Bradley describing how he invented CTRL-ALT-DEL.  One of the funniest things I’ve seen in a long time, especially when he gives credit to Bill Gates for making it famous.  Thanks Jim!

Critics blow whistle on Manley call. OTTAWA and TORONTO — Finance Minister John Manley was offside when he lobbied a bank chief on behalf of the Ottawa Senators hockey team, opposition parties said yesterday.”On the surface, it looks at the minimum like very bad judgment, bordering on conflict of interest,” Canadian Alliance MP and finance [...]

Casting my vote

September 29, 2003

I went and voted at the advanced poll last week. I’ll be watching the returns from Las Vegas Thursday (if it’s on TV there).  Despite my distaste for the tactics the Ontario PC’s employed during the campaign, I voted for them.  As I read more and more about the McGuinty platform, I become more convinced that [...]

United Right Could Win?

September 2, 2002

United right could be contender, poll says. OTTAWA — A united right-wing party would be a strong threat to form the next federal government, a new opinion poll suggests, providing added pressure on the Progressive Conservatives and the Canadian Alliance to form a union. Perhaps what the public is looking for is simply, as the [...]

Unite the Right: Not Gonna Happen

August 27, 2002

I’ve been watching the Unite the Right debate in Canada for some time. It won’t ever happen, because the parties are so different.  The idealogues of the Canadian Alliance will never compromise ("it’s particularly difficult for Stephen to compromise", says Jim Hawkes), and the Progressive Conservatives simply don’t want what the Alliance feels are basic [...]
