Savings from Dopplr and MAXroam

by alec on January 28, 2009

Everyone is looking for a business model these days.  If you don’t have one, you’d better get one in a hurry, unless you’re twitter, of course.

Monday Dopplr did just that, rolling out an online store that allows you to buy things that will make your travel experience better.  For example, you can buy a subscription to Monocle Magazine, travel guides, or  Pat Phelan’s MAXroam SIM to take the bite out of international roaming charges.  Pat’s company Cubic Telecom is partnering with Dopplr, providing them with a Dopplr SIM and website to manage their mobile usage.

Pat Phelan’s MaxRoam saved my wallet in Barcelona at MWC earlier this year.  Pop one of his SIMs into an unlocked GSM handset, and bob’s your uncle… you’re calling at reasonable roaming rates rather than inflated. For comparison purposes, I was paying somewhere under 40 eurocents (60 cents) per minute for roaming in Spain, as opposed to $3/minute on Rogers. I spent around 60 euros that week instead of close to $500.

It’s nine months in, and Pat says he’s saved his customers over $1 million since he launched.  To celebrate, in the next 24 hours you can top up your MaxRoam SIM at a 9% discount.  Details on his blog.

I’ll be travelling in Europe this summer, and definitely plan to make use of MaxRoam again.

Connectivity at MWC is a disaster!

February 12, 2008

Day 2 at the Mobile World Congress here in Barcelona.  Connectivity at the show has been an absolute bear.  My plan to use to Truphone with WiFi is a complete shambles at this point, as it is nearly impossible to get a WiFi connection at the show, never mind make a SIP connection over it.  [...]

MaxRoam on a MaxRoll…

February 1, 2008

Pat Phelan has been hard at work for the last little while, and I haven't heard much from him.  This morning, at 5 AM Eastern, however, mail appeared in my inbox.  He's just rolled out a mess of new updates to MaxRoam.  Photos and details are available on his blog.  The quick summary?   Full [...]

MaxRoam goes live

September 27, 2007

Cubic's MaxRoam SIM goes live today.  This is the SIM that lets you roam your phone internationally at local rates.  David Pogue's article in the NY Times is a good and balanced write-up.  As Andy Abramson noted, Pogue must have actually used the product. I'll be grabbing one of these and sticking it into a [...]

Cubic's revolutionary services launch

September 18, 2007

I've been chatting with Pat Phelan about Cubic Telecom's MaxRoam SIM and phones, which which were launched yesterday at TC40, for a while.  Pat says "it's a game changer", and I tend to believe him.  The offer is pretty compelling. The phones are 99 euros (or 159 euros for the Windows Mobile version), with all the usual accessories – headsets, [...]
