Gizmo Bug Sighting?

November 10, 2005

Andy has blogged about a potential bug in the new Gizmo Project which he and I spotted yesterday.  If you’re a PC Gizmo user who has to communicate with Mac Gizmo users, you probably shouldn’t upgrade until this one is fixed.  The feature in the new release which I was looking forward to the most (Outlook import) is still a [...]

New Gizmo Out

November 9, 2005

A new version of the Gizmo Project softphone went live this morning.  It now includes the ability to import your Outlook Contacts, customizable voice mail greetings, SMS notification of new voice mails, customizable ring tones, and call forwarding.  I, for one, will get tremendous use of the Outlook contact import.  Even better — integrate Gizmo [...]

Skype / Vonage Negative Economies of Scale?

October 20, 2005

The Stalwart Blog argues that Skype’s business model will erode as more people sign up for it.  Calls between Skypers are free, after all!  True, but Skype’s business model is to monetize services associated with that free network.  The metered minute arbitrage play is temporary – a diversion on the route to becoming the de-facto [...]

Business Model 2.0?

October 19, 2005

Peter Rip, Managing Director of Leapfrog Ventures, has been writing pretty extensively about Web 2.0 on his blog, Early Stage VC.  One of the best posts, in my opinion, is Web 2.0 Needs Business Model 2.0. The big question is how do you monetize a mashup? He expertly dissects the problems with micropayments, shared value models, and [...]

Aswath Rao on CALEA

October 18, 2005

In any event, I am [...]

Ignoring the Moose on the Table

October 17, 2005

Sometimes it’s better to ignore the "moose on the table", and sometimes not. Niklas Zennstrom has chosen not.  Last week he publicly named Microsoft, AOL and Yahoo as his biggest competitive threats.  I happen to know, from talking with folks at Microsoft, that they also regard Skype as a threat to their IM business, so it [...]

More on Lawful Intercept Requirements

October 17, 2005

There were some very thoughtful posts on the lawful intercept issue raised by Jeff last week. Aswath Rao puts aside the "rightness" of the FCC’s position completely, and instead looks at how it could be implemented. Among the many good points he makes is this little jewel: "I want to bring to your attention that complying to CALEA [...]

VoIP Wiretaps

October 14, 2005

Over the last week, wiretapping on VoIP has emerged as an issue on both sides of the border.  Jeff Pulver wrote this morning in Warning: The FCC Extend’s CALEAs reach to the Internet that the FCC wants to include "pure" VoIP systems that don’t touch the PSTN in CALEA.  In Wiretapping coming to Canada? Another fine [...]
