Merry Christmas from Digium

December 22, 2006

I just received a call from Digium VP Bill Miller to let me know that the latest AsteriskNow beta is up.  In addition, there have been wholesale changes to both Asterisk.org, and AsteriskNow.org.  I’m downloading the image now, but won’t be able to install it until tomorrow sometime. Bill mentioned that some people might be [...]

Fonality has stolen a page from the carriers play-book, and this morning is poised to announce that they’ve recently passed 50 million calls on Fonality based PBX’s, and are currently averaging 1.5 million calls per week.  The opening paragraph of their release (which I received last night) reads: LOS ANGELES – November 28, 2006 – [...]

The Truth about the GPL

November 22, 2006

The spat between Novell and Microsoft over patent licenses is generating plenty of comment in the blogosphere.  Microsoft apparently believes that it might finally have found a way to use its patent portfolio effectively against Linux, and Novell is saying “No-siree Steve, that’s not what we agreed!”.  And, of course, the open source community is [...]

Alec Saunders on Interviews

November 8, 2006

Flat Planet Phone Company CEO, and iotum Partner, Moshe Maeir pointed me to Ron Lewis’ Interviews site after I recorded a podcast with Ron recently.  Wow!  First, egomaniac that I am, I went and listened to my own interview.  It might be one of the better podcasts I’ve participated in.  Ron’s a great interviewer, and then [...]

November 6, 2006

In the world of fast moving Asterisk-based companies, there is perhaps none more quick than Chris Lyman’s Fonality.  This morning, they plant a stake in the ground with the announcement of PBXtra Professional, and the simple assertion that their Asterisk-based solution is ready to take on the enterprise.   Lyman’s bold position that Fonality’s solution has reached near [...]

Fonality Bitten By A Red Herring

November 4, 2006

This evening a minor controversy exploded in the Asterisk community as first Marcelo Rodriguez took Fonality to task over the security of its hosted model, and then Fonality CEO Chris Lyman responded via a guest posting on Garrett Smith’s blog.  Ken Camp weighed in with a “Tut tut, children” post, while ringmaster Andy Abramson waved his [...]

November 1, 2006

Star2Star was one of the standout companies I saw last week at Astricon.  These folks are integrating Asterisk into a number of offerings, including a slick portable VoIP system for use during emergency scenarios.  Inspired by hurricane Katrina, this hardened PBX incorporated WiFi networking, radio links, and a variety of other technologies, all designed to [...]

Astricon Wrap

October 28, 2006

Friday afternoon, here in Dallas, I was sitting in the final session of the Astricon show. Nine folks from the Digium engineering team were crammed on stage and answering questions from probably 100 of the hardcore faithful, ranging from basic technical questions to futures to investments. It was awesome. Sessions like this are where the [...]

Heading to Astricon Dallas

October 24, 2006

Astricon Dallas has started.  I’m skipping the tutorials today, and heading to Dallas tomorrow.  A 6AM flight.  Ugh!  Still, Astricon promises to be a great event.  500+ attendees, and 35 exhibiting companies all focused on, what else?  Asterisk.  I’ll be there as CEO of iotum, naturally.  We’ll be making an announcement on Thursday at the show.  [...]
