I considered Ubuntu, Randall, and may still go that route. I'm going to try configuring it on an older laptop here first to see if I can get Evolution to work for email. I had no luck with Evolution for Windows on either XP or Vista, but if it's a credible alternative to Outlook, then that may be good enough.

Alec,
I bought one of the first Asus eeePC machines (7" screen, 32GB SSHD, 2 GB RAM) at the beginning of 2008. You are right, at that time, a few rough edges (no bluetooth, short battery lie, no native Ubuntu, etc) and the keyboard size were the main issues. That being said, in the main, it's a great alternative which could be used for 50% of mobile days with less shoulder strain.

I'd really consider ditching XP and going to Ubuntu. The performance, boot time and reliability is vastly greater. Having a uber-high reliability, non-resource pig OS is a real bonus.

The good news is that the market has heated up and there are many options available. I think I'll wait for more 3G-enabled units before I buy my next one.
