Alec,

You're right. I call this Pedigree Marketing. It is a new spin on an old idea called Borrowed Interest Advertising where you get someone famous to be associated with the brand, product or service.

What's hilarious is how some media jump on board, and more funny, how bloggers who are in their own way media get consumed by this tactic, and then others follow because of who wrote first. The same thing happens with where investment money came from or where someone worked before.

All this Pedigree stuff does is create false credibility in something...

I did not get too excited about the service either. But then, I am a geek.

But I can see how this could be a 'no barriers of entry' type of service. It could basically be targeted at technophobes or those who just could not be bothered.

If they try it and like it, they may actually want to make it better and then (and only then) invest time needed to learn more useful packages or procedures.

As to the phone point of entry, it could be useful in the field or as a poor-man's self-reminder system.
