Asterisk, right now, on AsteriskNOW.org

by alec on November 22, 2006

Right in front of the American Thanksgiving Weekend, comes Digium’s AsteriskNOW distribution. For my American friends, what can I say?  Now you’ve got something to do this weekend after you’ve gorged yourselves on Turkey.   Available as an ISO, it includes Asterisk 1.4, a custom Linux distribution called rPath, a pretty graphical setup (take that, Trixbox!), and the new Digium GUI for configuration.

From the site:

AsteriskNOWâ„¢ is a Software Appliance; a GUI implementation with the open source Asterisk distribution. AsteriskNOW includes all the Linux components necessary to run, debug and build Asterisk, and only those components, so installation is easy. You no longer have to worry about kernel versions and package dependencies. Unlike other Linux distributions used to deploy Asterisk, no unnecessary components that might compromise security or performance are included.

Here’s a screen shot of the opening setup screen.

The Truth about the GPL

November 22, 2006

The spat between Novell and Microsoft over patent licenses is generating plenty of comment in the blogosphere.  Microsoft apparently believes that it might finally have found a way to use its patent portfolio effectively against Linux, and Novell is saying “No-siree Steve, that’s not what we agreed!”.  And, of course, the open source community is [...]
