Being the Weekend IT Warrior

by alec on May 7, 2006

Ever have one of those weekends where it seems like all you’re doing is being the household IT manager?  It’s one of those for me.

  • Memory upgrades on PCs.  The main machine I use at home has become very slow ever since I put multiple accounts on it for the rest of the family.  More memory seems to be the ticket.
  • New router.  Routers have just been a pain for me, recently. My Linksys WRT54GS been flaky for a while — some kind of memory leak it seems.  Every three or four days it would hang, and as a result, my phones (all IP) would also be dead. I’ve just been ignoring it.  Sometimes it’s nice to not have the phone ring!  However it’s been screwing up Janice who has a new job, and needs to be on call, so I decided it had to be fixed. I chatted with David Beckemeyer (of Phonegnome fame) who suggested replacing the Linksys, which I did last weekend.  I bought a Netgear WGR614.  Turns out it was a bad choice.  It lasts all of 24 hours before it hangs.  At David’s suggestion, I am now on a DLink DI-524.  Needless to say, it’s a nuisance.
  • New Capcha for the blog.  We’re getting as many as 40 new SPAM comments a day.  I’ve spent a bunch of time this morning upgrading Boriel’s Captcha on both Saunderslog.com and Simplyrelevant.com.  Hopefully that will solve the problem.

Now it’s off to Staples to return the Netgear router.

Alec,

I had a Linksys and a D-Link 614+ wifi router and one day I saw the 3Com 54G Wifi router on sale and being fed up of the DLink, I got one and has been the best router I've ever owned. (3CRWE554G72T)

You may wish to give it a whirl!

Thanks for the tip JP. If the DLink turns out to be a poor choice, I will definitely check this one out.
