[...] Talkster came out of stealth at the recent Voice 2.0 conference in Ottawa. After CEO James Wanless’ pitch, I had a chance to catch up with him and CTO Mark Gelman at the Voice 2.0 conference. Gelman let it casually be known that one of the “hidden under the covers” features of Talkster is a web services interface, allowing the Talkster system to be driven from an application. That feature alone has tremendous potential, and the ability to make Talkster into a true long tail player in the Voice 2.0 ecosystem. [...]

[...] Telephony is ripe for a Long Tail strategy. My friend Chris Wood proposed such a thing in a guest post here some time back. His thesis was that some conversations are more valuable than others, and Long Tail strategies would uncover that value. That certainly was the view behind the Skype acquisition. If the Long Tail is about niche markets, however, then the Long Tail of telephony isn’t necessarily only about uncovering commercially valuable conversations. It’s about uncovering niches! [...]

At the outset let me apologize for the discordant voice on an otherwise agreeable line of thinking.

But how would we react if Vail (Mr. AT&T) computed his company’s worth based on E.F. Hutton’s business? Certainly it would be different than what people have been saying about eBay and Skype. What happened to the claim that voice is just an application? Would we tolerate a cab driver charging us more just because the trip is to the offices of a VC? Or take a look at thinkingVoice. It is charging 15 cents a minute for what is essentially a two “Out” calls. Agreed, that they do some additional work. But do they justify three times the cost?

If the business attitude doesn’t change with the technology, then it can not claim the Voice 2.0 moniker. After all three years back, Clay Shirky nominated (http://www.shirky.com/writings/zapmail.html ) Vonage to be the foster child of “Voice as product” and today, if it is a poster child it is for something else.

Great thoughts, I've been thinking about the long tail and how it attributes to areas just outside of etailers. You've hooked me, I've subscribed to your blog
