The Marketing Playbook

by alec on November 30, 2004

I just acquired, and finished reading this handy reference.  Aside from being a great trip down nostalgia lane for me as an ex-Microsoftie, it’s also a tool that you can use to teach your team about some powerful, but easy-to-use (and digest), marketing strategies.  Written by Rich Tong and John Zagula, it’s a definitive work on marketing and business strategy.  Tong and Zagula are ex-Microsoft guys who are now partners at VC firm Ignition Partners.  You can also visit the Marketing Playbook blog to get additional insights.

Highly recommended.

Cooking for Engineers

Cooking for Engineers is a great blog to which I have just been introduced.  For science-geeks, this article on cholesterol and trans fats is very good.

ZIP.CA

November 23, 2004

I’ve been using the Zip.Ca service for the last week. For $25/month, you get unlimited DVD rentals, mailed to you.  Each DVD comes in a small tyvek envelope, with a stamped return envelope.  To choose the DVD’s you want, you go to their website, and pick from the (very) large selection they have.  When the movies are in, [...]

First gen WiSip Phones

November 23, 2004

Om Malik cross links VoIP Watch‘s WiSIP piece with this quote: "The sound and form factor is cellular circa 1990."  Yeah, they’re clunky.  And how about the price!  The good news is that this is all going to change.  Several presenters at VON, representing chip companies, talked about this generation as being separate WiFi and VoIP [...]

Sustainable Competitive Advantage

November 21, 2004

What is sustainable competitive advantage? One of the most common questions VC’s ask entrepreneurs is "what is your sustainable competitive advantage?"  In the case of technology entrepreneurs, they often mistake sustainable competitive advantage for some unique technical capability of their product.  I have to admit, as a technology geek, this one had me baffled for [...]

Good discussion on presence over on Telepocalypse.  Presence, today, is an artificial construct for a very real world problem – how do I let people know whether I am available?  How far can we / should we go in revealing that information before privacy issues take precedence?

The LitFiber saga continues

November 21, 2004

It seems an eternity ago that LitFiber announced plans to be the next Skype. At the time, I thought it was a stock market play.  Fast forward to November 19th, when LitFiber announced the acquisition of Grifco International, “a provider of oil and gas services equipment to the worldwide oil and gas industry”.  As part of [...]

Ephraim Schwartz on AT&T

November 21, 2004

Veteran reporter Ephraim Schwartz covers his dinner with AT&T’s Hossan Eslambolchi.  Fascinating stuff.  According to Eslambolchi, AT&T is a data company, not a voice company, and their future is "Services over IP", or SoIP.  I think they’ll need to involve the marketing department before they go public with that name. What does that mean? As [...]

Upgrade Day

November 20, 2004

For some time now, I've owned the AudioRequest ARQ1 PRO music server.  This box is a precursor to the networked music boxes you see today. It's a nice discreet matte black box that looks something like an audio component, but inside it's a PC married to a little bit of audio video hardware. The cover is easily [...]
