Casting my vote

by alec on September 29, 2003

I went and voted at the advanced poll last week. I’ll be watching the returns from Las Vegas Thursday (if it’s on TV there).  Despite my distaste for the tactics the Ontario PC’s employed during the campaign, I voted for them.  As I read more and more about the McGuinty platform, I become more convinced that it’s a step backward.  I don’t know that much can halt a McGuinty landslide at this point, but I’ve done my part to make that happen.

Now y’all get out and vote, ok?  And Mr. Eves — get rid of your PR team and hire some professionals the next time (if there is a next time).

Flipping the Bozo Bit

by alec on September 29, 2003

David Warren’s latest piece in the Ottawa Citizen this past Sunday continues his diatribe on traditional morality and the Catholic Church.  While we appreciated his theories and insights into the Gulf War, we’re turning him off on this issue.  Janice hasn’t read the last few, and I honestly found them repugnant.  The stuff he’s writing doesn’t belong on the editorial page of the newspaper for the National Capital of Canada.   Thank goodness we get the Globe and Mail too.  Warren’s getting circular filed until he comes to his senses.

Charter rights: fundamental or just important

September 22, 2003

The weekend Citizen carried Nigel Hannaford’s piece The gay marriage vote: a pox on gutless turncoats, which was published last week in the Calgary Herald.  Hannaford makes the statement that some beliefs are foundational while others are merely important. He concludes, near the end, that: The charter has been around for 21 years in a country [...]

David Warren gone bonkers

September 22, 2003

In Judas Rising David Warren has gone off the deep end.  He attempts to link the "Fate" of Canada with the internal struggles of the Catholic Church in Quebec, moralizing the whole way.  He refers to Pierre Trudeau as the "arch-apostate Catholic", and the current situation as Trudeaus "satanic legacy".  The same-sex marriage debate has [...]

VoIP Speed Ahead

September 20, 2003

It’s been an interesting day around here.  I have been using the Packet8 service for some time.  The quality on Packet8 is pretty good, although I did dig into it and change the code from G.723 to G.711 to boost the quality somewhat.  I have a feeling my old and funky firewall gets in the [...]

Other shopping

September 20, 2003

The other bit of shopping I did today, other than my new PC, was to visit the LCBO Vintages store.  Vintages brought Rosemount’s remarkable GSM (year 2000) in today.  This is a fabulous bottle of wine, albeit a little pricy at C$34.95.  I still have nine left from the 1999 vintage which are just starting [...]

VoIP spreading like wildfire

September 19, 2003

Over the last couple of weeks there seems to have been a minor explosion in the VoIP market.  I’ve personally been using the Packet8 service for a while.  The blogosphere is waking up to VoIP now.  Witness: Tong: Peer to peer voip. Ludwig: Nats and VoIP Allaire: VoIP, Vonage, Getting Real My sense is that [...]

Conservative Paul Martin

September 19, 2003

From this morning’s Globe: Martin vows to cut taxes, debt load.  Martin’s going to make life really tough for the conservative leadership in this country.  He can credibly assert his conservative credentials on the economy, while wearing the mantle of Liberalism.  As his coronation date nears, he’s stepping out to distance himself from the Chretien [...]

Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

September 12, 2003

In Oh Canada: A divided approach to marriage, John Ibbitson has pretty neatly outlined the government’s strategy on the gay marriage issue, and the shenanigans opposition parties are contemplating in order to score points.  Chretien’s strategy was obvious the day Martin Cauchon announced the new marriage laws, but this article tidily encapsulates the whole thing.

Whither the Conservative agenda?

September 12, 2003

We’re in the midst of an election campaign in Ontario.  Incumbent premier Ernie Eves is stumbling badly.  The PC party has chosen to try to portray their opponent’s leader, Dalton McGuinty, as not fit for office.  The strategy worked the last time, but it appears to be backfiring.  The PCs are throwing mud like mad, [...]
