Rant on VC’s

by alec on September 27, 2002

Short little rant about VC’s on www.postget.com.  Some of it’s obvious (but still good) advice — don’t use the same lawyer as your VC, for instance.  And I disagree with the comment about the big company guys (me being one).  This writer makes it sound like every large company is managed like a Dilbert cartoon.  Big Co guys can bring a breadth of experience, and vision, that small company people just don’t have.  See Paul Russo’s comments in this morning’s Ottawa Citizen about thinking small.

ADQ’s Mario Dumont: Quebec a Fierce Competitor

September 24, 2002

‘You will find Quebec a fierce competitor’. Excerpts from ADQ leader Mario Dumont’s speech to Toronto’s Empire Club yesterday.  Fabulous.  If I lived in Quebec I’d vote for him.  The separatists are worn out, bereft of ideas, intellectually bankrupt.

Rule #2: Build an Effective Organization

September 24, 2002

Installment #2 in my Top 10 Rules for Success in the Software Industry. Rule #2: Build an effective organization.  Like Rule #1, this one sounds deceptively simple.  Too many businesses, though, have broken organizations, and suffer because of it.  Sometimes those organizations were designed incorrectly to begin with.  More often than not, though, theyve just worn [...]

Free Software, to a Point

September 23, 2002

Free Software, at Least to a Certain Point.  The free software foundation holds a dinner and passes the hat, collecting $6,000 to keep the thing going.  Why? "Mr. Stallman’s point, now supported by many thousands of programmers worldwide, is that software becomes better when more people can work on it. Recently, several companies, including I.B.M., [...]

Working Out

September 23, 2002

Today’s the beginning of my new workout regime.  After a summer of complete and utter laziness, accompanied by the consumption of much fine wine, I weighed myself on Saturday AM…. 187 lbs with a body fat percentage of 24.5% – I have one of those funky Tanita scales that measures not just how heavy you [...]

Overpaying for Content Management

September 23, 2002

Are You Overpaying for Content Management?. Companies are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on software to manage their websites and other documents — and getting dubious returns. There’s got to be a better way. (published in Business 2.0, 2002-09-20) Very very true.  High end CMS systems are super expensive.  There are a lot of [...]

Italian Graffiti

September 22, 2002

And on the topic of sympathy for Israel, obviously I have been living in a vacuum here in Canada.  Last week in Italy, walking through the back streets of Venice, I came across this graffiti scrawled on a building.

St. John the Baptist’ Finger

September 22, 2002

Last week’s trip to Italy was a vacation for Janice and myself.  It was primarily an opportunity to see Renaissance Art in Florence and Venice.  Needless to say, we went to a lot of churches.  Not being Catholic, myself, I am somewhat sheltered from the Catholic tradition of preserving relics of Saints.  There were a [...]
