Creating a Blogroll with Radio

by alec on August 30, 2002

Phew… discovered this link earlier this evening on how to use the Radio Outliner to create a blog roll.  It looked as if it might be the answer to the navigator I’ve been trying to build. Been at it since about 11:00 PM.  Check it out on the right side of the page…. what do you think?

OpenCola

by alec on August 30, 2002

I’ve been playing with a beta of something called OpenCola for the last week or so.  OC is a next generation P2P application combining search with relevance. It’s something like Gnutella combined with a relevance engine like the one Amazon uses to recommend books. So, with OC you can:

  • search multiple sources simultaneously – all the popular search engines, news sources, blogspace etc.
  • categorize the results as to whether they are relevant or not
  • find more sites which are like the relevant sites you have found
  • share the results of your searches with other OC users plugged into the OC net, and add the results of their searches to your searches, building a knowledge base of relevant information around the topic

Download it here.

A lot of news in the papers these days about Kyoto.  Jean "will he or won’t he" Chretien will apparently sign Canada on this fall.  If you want to know a little more about the agreement, here’s a link from the National Post. The Citizen had a much better full page story about the agreement [...]

Apple Open Sources Rendezvous

August 30, 2002

Apple woos open source to Rendezvous. The Mac maker says it’s not just opening up the source code for its Rendezvous networking tool–it’s actively courting open-source developers to work with the technology. Interesting.  Apple, HP, and Lexmark (IBM, really) were all part of the original group of companies that supported Universal Plug and Play in [...]

Opposed to Telematics

August 30, 2002

Just Say No to Car TV. I want to add my voice to the chorus of people who oppose equipping cars with TVs and other electronic gadgetry. While this technology is meant to entertain and assist, it will more than likely end up killing and maiming. The technology landscape for car video may have improved, [...]

Canadian Politics

August 30, 2002

And on the Canadian political front: Next convention date a minefield for Liberals. The Liberals are having a tough time trying to figure out when they should have the convention to replace Chretien.  Boy, that was hard to predict! From Ehgloo (which OpenCola found for me!), Moving beyond the Chretien Era, in which the author paints [...]

Spolsky on Platforms

August 30, 2002

In this piece titled Platforms Joel Spolsky says "If you want a platform to be successful, you need massive adoption, and that means you need developers to develop for it. The best way to kill a platform is to make it hard for developers to build on it. Most of the time, this happens because [...]
